Best Gimbal for iPhone XS Max

Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal

As a proud owner of a Hong Kong version iPhone XS Max with 256GB storage and real Duo-Sim I’ve been looking for the best Gimbal for iPhone XS Max. It should help me create more professional video content for various projects, Streams and YouTube channels.

So many “Best Gimbal for iPhone XS Max”

As always I first consulted Google Search, hoping that someone already created an honest review, but most search results simply where like the ones below.

Google Search Results for “best gimbal for iPhone XS Max”

Although, all of those pages provided a list of gimbals including affiliate or referral links to buy them and grant the site’s owners a commission, double checking with YouTube made it clear, that most of the advertised Gimbals were overwhelmed with the iPhone XS Max’s size and weight.

Finding the “Best Gimbal for the iPhone XS Max”

After further research I finally found enough videos on YouTube to convince me to pick the Zhiyun Smooth 4 and ordered it at a local store here in the Ukraine for less than 150$.

Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal

I was surprised about the size of the Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal at first, and even more that it still is very lightweight. The installation is quite straight forward and basically only requires you to install Zhiyun’s iPhone App called ZY Play.

How does Zhiyun’s Smooth 4 fit the iPhone XS Max

Considering my Mous iPhone XS Max carbon fiber cover and screen protector I was surprised to learn that my iPhone weighs a total of 266g. Considering that Zhiyun’s Smooth 4 product specifications, stating a supported payload of up to 210g theoretical the Smooth 4 gimbal shouldn’t be able to balance my iPhone XS Max.
But, after testing it the first time I have to say that it works without a flaw. As long as the Gimbal’s battery level is above 10% even the more than 20% additional weight is not causing any problems.

Improving the Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal

I assume the additional weight compared to Zhiyun’s specifications will cause a short battery life compared to using a lighter phone. In some situations, as mentioned above, it may also not be able to keep the phone stable. Therefore, I’d recommend mounting some counterweights to move the center of gravity as close to the center of the gimbal as possible.

This and many other improvements, possible extensions and accessories for the Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal for your iPhone XS Max will be covered in another article later.
