In this article, we’re going to review one of the most popular email marketing tools called AWeber.
AWeber has a solid reputation among email marketing software as it was founded over 20 years ago and gained its share of loyal users.
It’s one of the tools people usually consider when they’re looking for an autoresponder, however, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best tool.
This review will help you decide if AWeber is the right fit for your business and if it’s able to meet your requirements.
What is AWeber?
AWeber is an email marketing solution with all the basic features you need for your business.
Not only does it offer a possibility to send one-time emails and email sequences, but also lets you create marketing automations and landing pages.
Additionally, users can split test their emails, have an overview of the email performance and product sales.
To be honest, as AWeber has a decent track record we expected more advanced features from the platform. Unfortunately, the available functionality only covers the essential needs of a business.
So, let’s have a closer look at the features AWeber has to offer.
AWeber Features Review
Let’s go over the features that you would usually expect from your email marketing software and see how AWeber implements them.
Campaigns and Automations
In AWeber, you can easily create email sequences that your subscribers will receive after they join your list or get a tag.
It’s strange to see that you can only choose from two triggers to start a campaign (Subscribed or Tag applied). Just to compare, ActiveCampaign offers more than 20 triggers that start your email sequence.
The drag-n-drop campaign builder is quite straightforward and intuitive, however, its functionality is extremely limited. You can only add the actions to send a message, wait, or apply a tag.
The automation only allows you to add/remove a tag or remove a subscriber from the campaign if a subscriber opens a message or clicks a link.
It’d be nice to see a little more complexity in the automation. So, if you’re looking for powerful marketing automation, you better go with ActiveCampaign.
Check out our ActiveCampaign review to see how many automation possibilities it offers. We also love their flowchart-like automations view.
Broadcasts
Another feature that you may be using quite often is broadcasts. Broadcasts in AWeber are one-time messages that you can send to your subscribers.
To create a broadcast, you can either use a drag-n-drop email builder with templates, or a plain text message, or HTML editor.
AWeber offers a wide selection of email templates with multiple color schemes so you don’t have to create an email from scratch.
To customize the template and add elements you can simply drag elements from the tools panel to the editor area.
The editor itself looks a little outdated and isn’t flexible as other email editors.
Landing Pages
One of the features we loved in AWeber is a neat landing page editor. Considering that it’s not the core functionality of the tool we were surprised to see how powerful the landing page editor is.
AWeber offers 20+ modern and stylish landing page templates for different purposes. You can easily create landing pages for webinar registration, book or product promotion, blog sign up, coaching consultation, and much more.
The drag-n-drop landing page editor is extremely fast and flexible. It allows you to add elements you need on your page and customize them the way you want.
You can even optimize your page for search engines using the built-in SEO options and easily add Google Analytics or Facebook pixel tracking.
If based on the features mentioned above you believe that AWeber may be the right email marketing tool for you, you can create your free account to test all the features yourself.
Sign-up forms
The sign-up form generator is another nice feature we discovered while reviewing AWeber.
You can choose a template for your form and customize the design and layout to your liking. The automation lets you add tags to anyone who submits the form.
After your sign-up form is ready, you may add it to your website. AWeber provides you with either the form code, or the HTML, or the URL of the hosted form.
AWeber Pricing
At the moment, AWeber offers only two pricing plans: Free and Pro plans.
You can use the Free plan as long as you have less than 500 subscribers. It goes with some functionality limitations, only 1 list profile, and 3,000/mo email sends. Nevertheless, it can be a nice way to start if you have a tight budget.
The pricing for the Pro plan starts at $19/mo for up to 500 subscribers. If you have more subscribers, the price will differ based on the size of your list. However, if you choose a yearly or quarterly billing you can save some money.
AWeber Pros&Cons
Pros:
- free plan
- fast landing page editor with sleek templates
- simple interface
- phone support within the business hours
Cons:
- email templates look outdated
- extremely limited automation possibilities
- lack advanced features other email marketing tools offer
- high price in comparison with similar tools
Conclusion
As you can see from the review, AWeber offers basic features you’d expect from any email marketing tool but not enough advanced features to compete with similar tools.
This can be enough for a small business but if you’re looking for more serious automations and wider functionality, it’s better to go with tools like ActiveCampaign or GetResponse.
The pricing of AWeber is another reason why we can’t recommend it. While it’s nice that you can start with the free plan, the price of the Pro plan is higher than the pricing similar tools that offer more and better features. Therefore, it feels like the price AWeber is charging for the free plan isn’t fair.
